Extremely Rare Islamic Glass: Kohl Flask in Animal Form Late 7th-8th Century with a Snake Inching Atop the Barrel: Remarkable Vessel. Outstanding example of ancient Islamic glass vessel in animal form which is quite rare. The crude execution is appropriate for the time, but know these pots were treasures for the upper classes. Glass from this period is extremely difficult to find especially as compelling as this example. A serpent or snake figure rides up the side of cask shaped container which likely held kohl or perfume. Height 3.5" (9 cm) Width 2.75" (7 cm) and Depth 1.75" (4.5 cm).
We engaged Elizabeth Drolet Art and Archeological Conservation Services to make two repairs to the vessel, the tip of the snake's head and proper back leg, remnants which were located inside vessel. We have a complete report by Drolet regarding repairs and treatments used. Phenomenal museum grade work.
