Rare, Small Silver Torah Shield. Late 18th - Early 19th Century in Silver with Faceted Glass Accents. Rare Torah shield from the late 18th Century, possibly early 19th Century in 800 silver from Poland or Galicia (part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). No hallmark found, but the work and baroque designs is very much a reflection of the skilled Jewish artisans who created ritual objects with exceptional craftsmanship at the time spanning decades.
Shield has an arched top with impressive repousse work of a palm tree, five peacocks elaborate foliate designs and interesting textured engraving. At center: Shabbat. What is striking is the addition of faceted jewels, all paste, at the columns and certainly the spray of clear glass blossoms at left and right. 7. 5" x 6.25. While shield exhibits its age and use, it remains in excellent condition and worthy of any collection.
