Exceptional and Rare Silver Platter, Amsterdam, 1822, Center Engraving Based on "Friday Evening Blessing" by Moritz Oppenheim. A museum piece worthy of any collection this silver platter was made in Amsterdam, 1822. Hallmarks found on reverse: Year mark "N" = 1822; · Maker's mark "JS" which stand for Jacob Hendrik Stellingwerff (active in Amsterdam, 1812-1826) and finally silver fineness marks. Silver platter rests on three silver balls and the craftsmanship and weight is very impressive.
The center engraving is based on a painting by Moritz Daniel Oppenheim entitled "Freitag Abend or Friday Evening Blessing" that was actually painted in shades of grays and black, no color. This addition to the center of the platter was engraved sometime between 1867-1906. Various items are engraved in the margins: the family emblem (a shield marked with pair of diagonal lines forming an inverted "V", and three Stars of David) flanked by a pair of angels holding books and blowing trumpets, and three additional Stars of David, the bottom one flanked by a pair of cornucopias. Again, these engravings were added over a span of years.
Incredibly, this platter has been kept in superior condition over 20 decades. It ultimately became (literally) a product of the Jewish reawakening of the late 19th and early 20th Century and the trends toward a renewed interest in the Judaica market.
