Shofar Horn and Rare Antique Box Case. Bronze Medallion of Rabbi Blowing the Shofar. Carved Bone Insets in Foliate Design w/Moses & Rabbi. Antique Shofar horn antique box case of considerable age and a vintage Shofar horn. The Shofar is made from a ram's horn and is blown at the end of Yom Kippur but is far more significant to Rosh Hashanah. Its distinctive sound carries symbolic meaning, such as acting as a call to introspection and repentance over the course of three distinct sounds.
For collectors of historic Judaica, antique Shofar cases are extremely difficult to find handmade in every conceivable construction; whether a fitted case, a box with a rack or a lined case. There is original green fabric affixed flush on the bottom of the box but very worn. Inside the box, much to our surprise a very thin laminate panel lifted out. Affixed to verso is a document in Russian which (conveniently) suggests strongly the provenance of this piece. Unfortunately translating the fragments that aere still legible make for little sense.
Box is in fine antique condition with scratches, dings, surface wear, and missing a short corner trim on right side. Nevertheless a remarkable piece of antique Judaica that remains impressive. 3.5 x 11.5 x 8" Especially fine is the patinated bronze medallion at center of box lid which is signed in Russian.
