Bezalel Academy of Art & Design, Jerusalem. Student Entry ca. 1910 Dramatic and Tall Brass Urn. The Biblical Bezalel in Exodus was the chief artisan of the Tabernacle and in charge of building the Ark of the Covenant. In celebrating his artistic genius, Boris Shatz, artist and sculptor, founded the Bezalel Academy of Art & Design along with other champions in creating a center for Israeli art. To be a student of the school, submissions of artistic pieces were required to enroll. This brass urn was such a submission very much embracing Yemeni influences including Arabic, Islamic and Ottoman cultures. The result is a spectacularly unique piece. 26" tall and 12" wide at the handles.
Condition: Solidly intact, no dents. It does appear someone thought it might look better with gold leafing pen paint and tested certain areas. Fortunately it didn't proceed much farther than pictured. Otherwise as a decorator item, this piece holds it own and is striking.
