Coin Silver Presentation Mug to Grandson of Celebrated Jewish Silversmith, Myer Myers. Dated Norfolk, Virginia October 16, 1839. For collectors and auction houses, the history that can come from a single antique sterling silver piece, especially with engraved presentations, can prove interesting and revealing. This beautiful cup made by W. Mitchell Jr., a storied silversmith in Virginia who also founded the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia in 1849 ultimately became the burial site of 25 Confederate Generals including Jefferson Davis and George Pickett along with the remains of 11,000 Confederate soldiers.
The cup is presented to Dr. Henry Meyers (1806-1845) who was the son of Samuel Myers (1755-1836) His father, Samuel, was the second son of Jewish silversmith Myer Myers (1723-1795) of New York City, NY, making him Henry's grandfather. The presentation was for his composing and writing the "Prize Address" for the opening of the historic Avon Theater dated Norfolk, Virginia October 16, 1839. None of the sons went into Myer Myers silver business, but his works are prized and seriously expensive with some 300 pieces in museums.
