Lot #113 Magnificent Luristan Bronze Horse Bit Panels in the Form of Elegant and Graceful Horses, 8th-7th Century BC

Description:

Magnificent Luristan Bronze Horse Bit Panels in the Form of Elegant and Graceful Horses, 8th-7th Century BC. A fine example of Luristan artistry an be seen in these cheek panels of a horse bit. Luristan art had the tendency to elongate the necks and bodies which allowed for exceptionally graceful details and curves. While missing the actual bit (the rod that is inside the animal's mouth) the two cheek panels dramatically exhibit the superb craftsmanship of the time. There are subtle etched details on the horses, notably a starburst in a circle on the hindquarters and braiding along the mane. The reverse of the panels are mostly hollow. Superior relic condition with only a split tail on one panel and chip to tip of one ear. Excellent deep black bronze patina. 3.75 x 3.5". Estimated Value $1,800 - 2,500
