Freer, Frederick Warren. "Nursing Mother" (Original Oil on Canvas). (1849-1908) Frederick W. Freer was an American born painter and instructor who studied abroad for a number of years hitting critical acclaim in the late 1880s when he was considered one of the great painters of women. In 1892, the Art Institute of Chicago hired him as an instructor for some 16 years. Freer actually proved adept in numerous styles and movements which can be seen when reviewing his body of work. There are three works of Freer in auction.
A remarkable number of notable artists in the late 19th Century were inspired to paint women nursing infants. Not so much as capturing a moment in life, but more so symbols of the opportunities in America as her population was increasing with so many from Europe coming for new opportunities; "the land of milk and honey." These works consistently blur or slightly obscure the women's face with the focus on the nursing baby, healthy, glowing pinkish white, a life full of potential in a new land that was also coming into its own.
Frederic Freer has delivered a stunning pastel painting embodying these elements. His command of color and lighting especially in his illumination of the young baby is master class. A hauntingly beautiful work.
Actual artwork measures 30 x 25" and is professionally and beautifully framed in gilt wood to 43 x 38". We note a tiny puncture at the bottom of painting that does not distract. The size of the painting and the elaborate frame will require outside shipping.
