James Fenimore Cooper: American Author who Enjoyed Immense Success in the First Half of 19th Century. Two (2) ALS and One (1) Pay Voucher (1789-1851) Tremendously successful early 19th Century American author whose historical romance captured a global audience. His LAST OF THE MOHICANS published in 1826 became one of the most widely read novel of the 19th Century. These were followed by histories of the Navy and novels such as THE PATHFINDER, DEERSLAYER and so many more. Lot includes two (2) ALS and one cheque boldly signed. One letter is undated sent to Dr. Marsh returning theater tickets his family were unable to use that evening and in hopes someone else who can use in time. Cooper also invites him to visit if in the neighborhood. The paper is embossed with the logo for "Weynen" (or Papiers Weynen) refers to paper produced by Timmothee Weynen and his company P. Weijnen & Fils, which was active in France and the Netherlands in the 19th century. Cooper lived there for a time 7.5 x 5".
The second ALS dated 1850 is written from Cooperstown, NY, the city being founded by his father and where Cooper lived the last 15 years of his life. It is a bit difficult to read but is regarding immediate shipping of sheets for stereotyping. He also mentions concerns over competitive editions and the quality of the physical book. Only in good shape as it appears it was in a scrapbook and paper residue is affixed to the back of the letter. 5.5 x 6.75"
The third, a pay voucher dated 1837 and an excellent and clean execution of his signature. The check had a tear but has been expertly repaired with acid free tape. 2 x 5.75" A perfect piece for display.
