James Russell Lowell: American Romantic Poet, Critic and Ultimately, a Diplomat Five (5) Autographed Letters Signed Dated 1860-1887 (1819-1891) Graduate of Harvard University and associated with a group of New England poets and writers collectively called "fireside poets" rivaling the popularity of British poets. He was a staunch abolitionist which garnered him accolades and recognition. His popularity was undeniable which allowed him to travel to Europe to study languages. Ultimately he was awarded by President Hayes an ambassadorship to Spain as Lowell campaigned for Hayes who was also a huge fan of Lowell's "The Bigelow Papers". He was then in 1880 appointed Minister to England. Offered are 5 autographed letters signed. Earliest is dated 1860 written while in Cambridge, Massachusetts regarding a debt and issues with Atlantic Monthly which was founded in Boston with Lowell being the first editor. The balance of the letters are during his stay in London and simple correspondence. All in excellent condition with every letter sharp and legible but his writing is challenging.
