American Authors: Bret Hart and Richard Henry Dana Jr. Autographed Notes Signed both Late 19th Century. Bret Hart (1836-1902) and Richard Henry Dana (1815-1882), autographed notes signed. Both accomplished authors know for their distinctly American voices within their writing. Hart spun tails of all types of rascals, whether from mining towns, gamblers and thieves and proved popular. Two years after his death though, Mark Twain took him to task for being insincere in editorials which disappoints. Dana went into maritime law and wrote reference books on the legal rights of sailors and conversely, their responsibilities. Just before taking the bar he wrote 10 Years Before the Mast a work he is most remembered for. Abraham Lincoln appointed him US Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. Dana writes in letter dated 1876 that he is pleased to provide an autograph, Hart writes on note card dated 1884 from the Consulate of the United States of America at Glasgow expressing he can't get to London to attend an event to say hello to her husband
