Booker T. Washington: Principal The Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Inst., Tuskegee, Alabama TLS Dated 1904 (1856-1914) Washington proved a significant educator, author and orator in the late 19th Century into the early 20th. Century. Born into slavery he was freed when troops arrived at Hales Ford, Va. He became educated and in 1881, he was named as the first leader of the new Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, an institute for black higher education. In 1901 he published his autobiography, Up Form Slavery which earned him and invitation to the White House by Teddy Roosevelt being the first black American to meet with a president on equal terms. Offered is a letter on Tuskegee letter head dated 1904 suggesting to a C.H. Scott to build a hotel in the immediate area as the need was clearly apparent for travelers and family. Signed in dip style steel point fountain pen. In excellent condition, very legible with a tiny drip on the "t" of Washington.
