Heinrich Schliemann: Pioneering Archaeologist Best Known for Excavations at the Ancient Sites of Troy and Mycenae. Rare Autograph (1822-1890) German businessman and one of the most influential archaeologists of the 19th Century. He embraced the notion that the places mentioned by Homer in his works such as Troy, Mycenae and Tiryns to lend credence to the Iliad reflects historical events. Of course Schliemann was a subject of much criticism in modern day due to his crude methodology (with virtually no documentation) and removal of priceless artifacts and coinage bordered on looting. But his legacy, the good with the bad remains a major footnote in early archeology. A slip of paper 6 x 2.75" almost akin to an autograph book leaf, is in fine condition with inscription in German to Dr. Meyer with his very bold signature, H. Schliemann. COA by R.R. Auctions.
