The lettering by Welles' secretary is flawless with Secretary of Navy Gideon Welles signing "G Welles" below "Very respectfully" ALS by John Hay dated 1912 but Hay did serve as the private secretary to President Lincoln and later a authored a biography. Bold writing and signature to a Mr. Shuyler dated 1904 on how to get Newbury, New Hampshire via train. Robert Todd Lincoln, the President's eldest son against his mother's wishes was commissioned as an assistant adjutant serving the last weeks of the Civil War. Letter of recommendation signed by Lincoln to General Wright, Chief of Engineering.
Finally an autographed tribute to President Lincoln signed by John W. Kern, Senator from Indiana and considered the first Senate majority leader "The memory of Abraham will be enshrined in the hearts of the American people….Lincoln was great because he was good and won grandly because he stood unfalteringly and always for the rights of man. John W. Kern, Washington, Aug. 7, 1912" Two vintage original etchings of Lincoln and Hay included.
