Fitzhugh Lee, Confederate Major General and Nephew of Robert E. Lee Autographed Letter Signed of Interest Dated May 29, 1870 (1835-1905) Nephew of Robert. E. Lee and a Confederate Major General who fought at Antietam and Gettysburg as well a cutting his way out of Appomattox only to surrender two days later. In this two page ALS Lee writes to ex-Gov. John Letcher of Virginia alluding that Union Major General George H. Thomas, a native Virginian had at the outset of the Civil War applied for a commission with the Confederate Army(!) Lew writes "In my last communication with you, on the subject your referred to, you said you thought Thomas' letter to you had been destroyed at the time of the burning of your house, there was some probablility of Gen. Smith having kept a copy of it, he might testify to you receiving such a letter. I send you my letter….denying that you ever rec'd a letter from Thomas. Be kind ehough to write me such a letter that I can publish". Note, Major General Thomas took a leave of absence from the Regular Army from November of 1860 to April 11, 1961 when he was ordered to return to his old regiment". There just may be more to this story………… 8 x 9.5 folded. Fine to very fine condition. In pencil a family member wrote in pencil. "Valuable letters relating to war questions.
