Silver Torah Crown with the Twelve Tribes, 20th Century. A substantial silver Torah crown (Keter Torah) of 20th-century manufacture, formed as a domed architectural canopy with radiating ribs and a central finial, the sides cut with panels representing the symbols of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The crown originally suspended small bells, several of which are now absent. The overall design—boldly modeled, modernist in spirit yet rooted in traditional iconography—recalls mid-century German synagogue silver, and the work is stylistically consistent with creations associated with the renowned silversmith Ludwig Wolpert (1900–1981). Torah crowns such as this are placed atop the wooden rollers of a Torah scroll and serve both as ornament and as honorific regalia.
