Rare Jewish Flagellation Whip for Yom Kippur, 19th Century. Rare ritual whip used for symbolic self-flagellation during penitential rites on the eve of Yom Kippur. Constructed with a braided leather lash and an elaborately mounted handle wrapped in leather and silver-tone metal bands with engraved foliate decoration. Terminating in a weighted leather tab.
This form of ritual implement is associated with the traditional malkot custom practiced in parts of Central and Eastern Europe as an expression of repentance prior to Yom Kippur. Extremely scarce survivals are known. A comparable example is held in the collection of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, donated by noted Judaica collector Billy Gross.
