Grandmother and Child, Signed. Graphite drawing depicting an elderly woman and a young child walking together across an open landscape, the figures rendered with expressive, slightly exaggerated features and draped garments suggestive of Eastern European Jewish village life. The grandmother carries a chicken tucked under her arm while holding the child's hand, a motif often associated with themes of caretaking, continuity, and survival. In the background, a cluster of modest wooden houses appears tilted and compressed, reinforcing a sense of instability and displacement.
The work is executed in a loose but deliberate graphic style, with confident line work and textured shading that emphasizes movement and emotional weight rather than strict realism. Facial expressions are understated yet evocative, conveying fatigue, resilience, and quiet determination. The composition centers the figures while allowing ample negative space, drawing attention to the relationship between the two subjects.
Signed by the artist in pencil at the lower margin, with additional handwritten notation present. The drawing is presented under mat and frame. Overall, the piece reflects mid-20th-century Jewish figurative graphic art, particularly works addressing memory, generational bonds, and the lived experience of Eastern European Jewish communities.
