Framed portrait depicting Rabbi Elijah ben Solomon Zalman, the famed Vilna Gaon (1720-1797), one of the most influential rabbinic scholars in Jewish history. The image presents the Gaon seated in study, wrapped in a striped tallit and holding an open book, rendered in a traditional devotional style. The work bears a signature in the upper left of the image and is accompanied on the reverse by a period German-language certificate of authenticity, explicitly stating that the painting is an original work executed from nature and not a copy, with reproduction rights reserved. The backing also bears a Rome inscription dated 1931-1935, indicating European provenance between the wars. Housed in a gilt wood frame; label from Ted Gibson Inc. art services affixed to the reverse. Light surface wear and craquelure consistent with age.
