Bernard (Dov) Friedlander Modernist Hebrew Presentation Trophy, Petah Tikva, 1939. Striking modernist metal trophy designed and produced by Bernard (Dov) Friedlander (1881–1941), pioneer of fine metalwork in pre-state Israel. Cylindrical goblet form raised on a stepped circular base, bearing bold Hebrew inscriptions in relief and engraving. One side features a triangular cartouche enclosing the verse: "Mi kamocha ba'elim Adonai" ("Who is like You, O Lord, among the mighty") from Exodus 15:11. The reverse is engraved with the award dedication: prize for excellence in a "Made in the Land of Israel" shop-window display contest, awarded by the Municipality of Petah Tikva, dated Adar 5699 (1939).Good overall; surface scratches and minor bends consistent with age and use.
Bernard (Dov) Friedlander was among the foremost figures in early Israeli metal design. Trained in Lódz, Warsaw, Odessa, Tbilisi, and Berlin, he established workshops in Germany before immigrating to Palestine in 1932, where he founded a metalworks and silver-plating factory in Tel Aviv. His workshop produced synagogue metalwork and ceremonial Judaica for Jewish communities in Europe, England, and the United States.
