Lot #1874 Esthetic Sikhote-Alin Meteorite with Regmaglypts

Description:

Esthetic Sikhote-Alin Meteorite with Regmaglypts. This pristine 91.2 gram 2 X 2 X ½ inch dark steel gray colored Sikhote-Alin iron nickel meteorite that fell on Feb.12, 1947 in Siberia is the rarer of the two types possessing regmaglypts, small crater-like impressions that formed by ablation of Troilite (Iron Sulfide) when the meteorite was streaking through the sky at high temperature. The large meteorite body broke up twice during its fall to earth with only the higher breakup creating the meteorites with the regmaglypts, the lower breakup creating the shrapnel type meteorites. The surface of this meteorite is special covered with various sized regmaglypts on one side and just a few shallow regmaglypts and many small micro pits on the back side that did not form regmaglypts because the meteorite did not tumble during its descent but rather had just one side ablated with the intense heat. Sikhote-Alin meteorites are named for the Sikhote-Alin mountain range near where they fell in Siberia. Estimated Value $375 - 475
