Coptic Textile Fragments 4th -6th Century, Carefully Archived and Presented in Frames. Thanks to the arid climate in Egypt, a number of Coptic textiles and fragments miraculously are still available after more than 1,300 years. The majority of these pieces are held by prestigious museums around the world but fortunately some have remained in private collections. Offered are two examples:
1.) Having two woven panels of man and beast with the borders having a repeating cross in black yarn on what was likely natural or undyed background. Fragment is 6½ x 5" and framed to 9½ x 8½"
2.) This specimen has far more detail work and on closer inspection, includes people intertwined in multi-colored foliate designs with a woven trim of repeating faces. Fragment is 9 x 5" framed to 11½ x 8" and in spite of two sections missing, example still remains visually appealing.
