Two (2) Ancient Fragments Both Terracotta, One with Designs of a Sphinx-Like Creature the 2nd, Arretine, with Numerous Animals. Two interesting ancient terracotta fragments both exhibiting animals both real and mythical.
The darker terracotta fragment clearly reveals a Sphinx like creature with the head of a female, the body of a lion and the tail of a serpent, virtually intact. Fragment measures 3 x 4" with Sphinx image intact.
The Arretine fragment is in glossy red slip, decorated in relief and was made at Arretium and elsewhere in Italy from about 100 b.c. to about a.d. 100. The details from this fragment reveal a bird, a puma, a rabbit and a dog as well as abstract and starburst designs. 4¼ x 2¾".
