Mercury Atlas-6: Rare, Historic Umbilical Cable Section Used to Place Col. John Glenn in Orbit, 20 Feb 1962, On Frie. A segment of umbilical cable from Mercury-Atlas 6, measuring 2" long and 1" in diameter, which was connected to Friendship 7 during launch procedures. The cable provided all electrical power to the spacecraft up to the T-minus 30 second mark, at which time it was ejected.
Presentation to Bernard Hohmann is a standout given the length of the cable and has been encased in lucite for preservation. Lucite has discolored only slightly not uncommon given other examples of encased items we have seen ranging from patches to flown coins from the very early 1960s. This is an exceptional example of space from the earliest manned space program worthy of any level of collector.
