Intriguing Collection: Colonial America and Civil War Era Documents, Eight Pieces Total. Fine collection numbering 8 pieces total all in very good to very fine condition:1.)Colonial America: Handwritten bill for the repair of General Lewis Morris' carriage fleeing the British to go from New York to Philadelphia, iron gall ink on laid paper dated 1777 Lewis Morris signed the Declaration of Independence but slow paying of bills. 10.5 x 8.5". 2.) A letter dated 1791 to Glen & Bleecker by The Glen and Bleecker families were prominent Dutch-American merchant and landholding dynasties in 18th-century Albany and Schenectady, New York, connected through intermarriage and major real estate ventures. Docked on verso by Jacob Morris Esquire Clerk of the County. Executed in iron gall ink on laid paper 10.5 x 8.5"3.) Letter from 1849, Pre-Civil War Nov. 7, 1849. Letter from an Enoch Pearson to his two nephews, Charles & William who are about to leave for California to seek gold. Pearson, clearly a man of strong religious convictions writes 'But my young friends, remember with all the Gold of California mines at your disposal, you wil not be happy unless you remember to obey the commands of your creator, the giver of every good thing. You are going to the land of sin and disapation in all its forms--temptations will beset you in every path." Basically the entire letter is a stern sermon but absolutely fascinating. Very fine, near exceptional condition, 10 x 7.5"4.) During the Civil War, merchants would follow advancing soldiers and sell merchandise. General Grant allowed this but refused all Jewish Merchants. When Lincoln heard of this he reprimanded Grant and the ban lifted. When Grant was elected president he made sure some Jews were appointed. This bit of history is clearly evident with a receipt to Levy & Co. Dry Goods a permit to engage in commerce. Dated 1864 8 x 7" appears to be torn deliberately to indicate expiration.5.) Pay Voucher dated 1863 for a Major Elijah C. Bratt $60-$70 per month and his two slave each receiving $11 per month6.) Two discharge vouchers dated 1866 with monies itemized due to their completing service.7.) From 1899 Special Order handwritten discharging two soldiers and the promotion of a third.
