Alexis-Simon Belle. Portrait of Prince James Francis Edward Stuart Oil on Panel. (1674-1734) Well known portrait by French artist, Alexis-Simon Belle who documented the exiled Stuart court. James Frances Edward Stuart, Prince of Wales (1688-1766) portrait was painted several times by the artist. This original portrait thought to be painted in 1712, captures while posed in armor. In the 17th and 18th centuries, successful portrait painters like Belle ran active ateliers. These legitimate studios required multiple studio-assisted replicas based on the demand by allies, royal family members and patrons. Most certainly the portrait offered is from that period. It appears that the gilt oval frame and the darkened black panel with various notations in paper on the verso are original. Easily noted are the large brass tabs to hold panel in place are contemporary. Panel is 9.5 x 8" and with the oval frame, 12.5 x 10.5". The art has been remarkably well archived for some 300 years and is without issues. Be sure to note the portrait of Princess Louis Stuart, Daughter of King James II by Belle also in this auction.
