First Knife In Space Carried by Alan Shepard, May 5, 1991. The Randall Model 17 Astro was the first knife in space, carried by astronaut Alan Shepard aboard Freedom 7 in May 1961. Designed specifically for NASA’s Mercury program, it was developed by Bo Randall with input from astronaut Gordon Cooper and NASA flight surgeon Dr. William Douglas. Seven were made by Randall Made Knives in Orlando, Florida.Offered is a very hard to find promotional 2.5" long knife encased in Lucite, 4.25" in diameter. Know the wording on the promotional is a bit ambiguous making it read it flew into space but that isn't the case. Nevertheless, a great artifact from the 1960's when the USA was reaching for the stars. Estimated Value $300 - 500
