STS-51D, 1985, FLOWN "Statue of Liberty" Official Copper Centennial Seal FD Cover (8x6") A fascinating lot which the consignor (Bob Stuckey" describes as follows in his COA: "Two 15-inch replicas of the Stature of Liberty were flown on STS-51D, April 12-19, 1985, on behalf of the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Foundation. These replicas were cast from copper removed from the Statue of Liberty during its restoration prior to its Centennial in 1986. Following the STS-51D flight, one of the replicas was melted down and mixed with other copper reclaimed during the restoration. This copper mixture was then used to produce Official Centennial Seals, which were then sold by the US postal Service to help fund the restoration process. The other replica is on display at Ellis Island…". This lot includes both one of the finished Postal Service covers as well as the NASA documentation (including photos) showing the process by which the copper was flown. A fascinating lot.
