Polk, Sarah Childress (1803-91) Wife of President James K. Polk. She served as his secretary, helped him write speeches, attended cabinet meetings, and advised him on political issues. Signature, place and date on a 2¼ x 4½ in. slip of paper. The former First Lady wrote, "Mrs. James K. Polk, 'Polk Place,' Sept. 18, 1885."
