1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet, Noe-17 Rarity-3, NGC graded F12. Glossy medium steel gray with slightly darker steel gray toning in the protected areas. The devices are relatively smooth but there is extremely fine roughness covering the protected areas. Both sides were lightly cleaned leaving microscopic hairlines on the devices, but the hairlines and roughness can not be seen without a good glass. Struck slightly off center to K-4.5 leaving the upper half of "IN" off the planchet while the remainder of the legends are complete. In addition the strike was uneven, strong at the bottom and softer at the top causing some weakness on "NG" in ENGLAND. Nonetheless, this piece offers nice eye appeal for the grade. The date and denomination are bold, the Pine Tree is strong, and the legends are easily readable. The only notable mark is a thin horizontal nick across the 1 in the date. Weight listed as 71.5 grains on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
