Madison, James (1751-1831) 4th President of the United States (1809-1817); called the Father of the Constitution. Partly-printed Check Engrossed and Signed as President, 2½ x 6¾ in., Washington, Nov. 23, 1812. Written on the Bank of Columbia and paid "to A.B. or bearer" in the amount of eleven dollars. A.B. was likely Aaron Burr. The check is unnumbered, has a decorative border, and is a "Private Account." One crosscut cancellation affects the "e" in "eleven" but does not affect Madison's signature which is strong and clear. The War of 1812 officially began on June 18, 1812, just over five months before President Madison signed this check.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,200.
