(1667-69) Saint Patrick's Farthing Breen-218 Griffee G81-2/2c Rarity-8 F15. Variety with what Breen calls a "Martlet below King." Slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker golden olive toning on the "splasher" that covers the crown. The surfaces are decent but do display uniform extremely fine granularity on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. Nicely centered on a planchet with a diameter of 25mm, which is quite large for this denomination. The strike is a bit uneven with some elements stronger and others weaker, but the tiny "Martlet" under the king is strong. John Griffee, who was a dedicated student of this series, knew of only a single example of this die variety. This piece brings that count to at least 2 since it is not his discovery coin. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight 83.6 grains.
Estimated Value $250-UP.
