1823 Private Restrike PCGS graded MS66 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous steel brown and light chocolate with 20% of the faded original red remaining. No spots, stains, or contact marks. The only defect is a short struck-through line left of the upper point of star 12 (caused by a short piece of wire or thread stuck on the die). Almost perfectly centered on a flawless planchet. Quite nice for one of these "Restrike" cents, which were struck privately outside the mint circa 1862-1879 using discarded mint dies that were sold as scrap. M-LDS showing two die cracks on the obverse and a single crack on the reverse in addition to the usual die rust and rim cuds. One of the finest seen, better than any of the examples offered in the famous Dan Holmes collection (see lots 176-183 in our 5/30/2010 sale).
Our grade is MS65. The attribution and Fitzgerald provenance are shown on the PCGS label.
Population 6; none finer at PCGS. Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex Garry Fitzgerald collection.
