1824/2 N-1 R1 Overdate 4 over 2 PCGS graded MS63+ Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous light olive and bluish steel brown with 10% of the original mint color remaining on the obverse, traces on the reverse. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. Virtually flawless. The best identifying marks, and they are visible only with the aid of a good glass, are two tiny specks of darker toning at star 11, one under the left point and the other near the dentils under the right point, plus a very light diagonal nick off the upper right point of star 2. E-MDS, before any crumbling in the dentils at star 2 or stars 3-5. The inner circle segments at the dentil tips are clearly visible from star 1 to star 9.5. A choice, very attractive example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Called MS63 Choice and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #35722. Bland also says MS63 but tied for CC#1 honors in his census.
Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade. Only three confirmed mint state examples are known, and this piece is far superior to either of the examples offered in the remarkable Ted Naftzger collection (our sale 2/1/2009, lots 149 & 150). The attribution and Fitzgerald provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
Population 1; 1 finer in MS64 (see the following lot).
