Monroe, James and John Quincy Adams. Partly-printed document signed as President and Secretary of State, 1p, vellum, 14½ x 11", Washington, Jan. 4, 1822. A ship's paper for the ship Virginia of New York, with Charles Reese as master, mounted with no guns and navigated with twelve men, allowing the ship "To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance seisure or molestation…." Countersigned by Jonathan Thompson, Collector of the Port of New York. Official seal is at lower left. Very good; considerable age yellowing to vellum. Monroe's signature is of medium boldness, with some fading to the "roe"; Adams' signature is bold. The lovely naval engravings are traversed by one vertical fold and a bit of foxing at edges.
