Roosevelt assumed Office from the Vice Presidency following the assassination of William McKinley in 1901. After serving as the 26th President from 1901-1909, he was the Progressive "Bull Moose" candidate (1912), and 1916 (declined). Formerly he served as Governor of New York and Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He organized the First Regiment of U.S. Volunteer Calvary ("Roosevelt's Rough Riders") serving in Cuba, and was the recipient of the 1906 Nobel peace prize for his role in ending the Russo-Japanese War. He was the first President to ride in an automobile in 1902, and the first to ride in an airplane in 1910.
