The Hoovers met while both were studying at Stanford University. Soon after their marriage, Hoover accepted a job as a mining engineer for a private corporation in China, where they were caught up in the Boxer Rebellion. Their settlement in Tientsin was under heavy fire for almost a month; while Lou worked in the hospitals, Herbert directed the building of barricades. Both Hoovers learned Mandarin Chinese. Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) was the 31st President of the United States (1929-1933).
