Philippines. Republic. Kagitingan Sa Barangay Decoration. Established 1973 for award to Integrated Civilian Home Defense Forces for bravery in combating insurgents, in three classes, Lakan (1st), Datu (2nd) and Maginoo (3rd). A First Class Lakan neck medal, 60mm x 42mm, in oxidized bronze, gilt and multi-color enamels on full length neck ribbon as worn. The official statutes state that the Lakan Class is only "awarded by the President of the Philippines to any ICHDF member or other civilian official who has participated in action involving actual conflict with an enemy distinguishing himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. He must perform in action a deed of personal bravery or self-sacrifice, so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish him from other members, or the performance of which is more than ordinarily hazardous service", clearly very stringent award requirements fully equal to the USA Medal Of Honor, the British Victoria Cross, etc. Reynolds "Philippine Medals" pgs. 53-54. Only the second specimen seen by this cataloger in over 25 years, thus presumed Rare. A choice specimen, better than Extremely Fine with excellent enamels and ribbon.
