Description Description: 1881 James Garfield Gold Medal. J-PR-43. NGC graded Medal Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. 18 mm. Gold Medal. An exquisite Proof featuring a high relief bust of the martyred President in unusually crisp "ultra cameo" contrast against the smooth mirrored finish.James A. Garfield was a great president, if by "great" one illustrates greatness by not doing uncivilized things. Garfield took office in March of 1881. The man was a marvel who could write Latin with one hand and Greek with the other - at the same time. He was shot in July and died three months later. "He didn't have time to accomplish his plans," say the standard histories. Only July 2, 1881, only a few months into his term, President Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau, a disgruntled office-seeker, in a Washington, D.C., railroad station. He died of complications from the injury in September 1881. Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000. Ex: Henry Chapman Auction Lot #6489. Categories:
