Description Description: Polk, James K. Autograph Letter with excised signature, one page, 9¾ x 7¾ in., Columbia, Tennessee, Nov. 12, 1844. With holograph address panel. A 2 1/8 x 4½ in. section, containing Polk's signature, was cut from the letter, probably as a souvenir of the newly-elected President. Marked "Private" and written to George M. Dallas, his vice presidential running mate, during the 1844 presidential election. In part: "The returns (unofficial) are in from all the counties--except one small Democratic County--and if correctly reported we have lost this State by a majority ranging from 75 to 200 votes….the counties in the Western division of the State failed to do as well as anticipated. All now depends on New York. It is true we will succeed without New York, if we carry Louisiana & Indiana & I think we will, and either one of the states of Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland or N. Carolina. With the vote of New York - we cannot be defeated." Although Polk lost his home state of Tennessee to Henry Clay, he did, indeed, win the vote of New York and became the eleventh President. Estimated Value $700 - 900. Categories:
