1853 N-23 R4 Stray 4 Punched into Hair MS60. Lustrous light bluish steel brown with 5% of the red remaining on the obverse. There is a faint horizontal hairline on the chin and a tiny planchet flake on the rim at star 5, as struck. A shallow low spot (caused by debris on the die) covers most of the neck and some of the field right of the inner curl, and similar low spots show over CENT. Scarce
EDS, die state a. The die lines from the dentils under star 1 and the date are clear, as is the stray 4 punched into the hair right of the ear. Tied for CC#7 overall but tied for second finest of the early state.
