Clark McClelland's Personal Copy of His Astronaut Monument Design/Proposal SIGNED BY 25+ ASTRONAUTS AND NASA LUMINARIES. Clark McClelland designed and presented a concept for a memorial for astronauts in recognition of their services and ultimately their lives for the advancement of understanding and the progress of science to be located at the Kennedy Space Center. The design was a small plaza centered with a pyramid tiered by Missions Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. This presentation took place at the "Saturn V, Apollo 6 Manned Flight Awareness Presentations held at the Ramada Inn, Cocoa Beach, Florida on April 3, 1968. A great number of astronauts signed including Alan Shepard, Jack Sousma, Alan Bean, Story Musgrave, Ron Evans, Dave Scott, Fred Haise, Paul Weitz, Rod Middleton (Apollo Mission Director), Werner von Braun (German-American aerospace engineer and space architect), Gene Cernan, Shorty Powers (NASA Public Affairs Officer) Don Eisele, Vance Brand, Curtis Le May (Legendary General spanning WWII to nuclear age), Sam C. Phillips (Air Force General and Director of NASA Apollo Program 1964-1969), Jeannette Piccard (First woman to fly to the stratosphere and balloon pilot) George E. Mueller (head of Office of Manned Space Flights 1963-1969) Ed Gibson (Skylab), Bill Dana (actor and comedian), James McDivitt, Deke Slayton, Ed Mitchell, Jim Lovell, Al Worden, Frank Borman, James E. Webb (the second Administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 and namesake of the James Webb Telescope in 2002), Jerry Carr, James B. White, Edward H. White and Captain Eddie Rickenbacker. A phenomenal collection of signatures no doubt to recognize McClelland's efforts to create a memorial. One eventually was dedicated in 1991 known as the Space Mirror Memorial, a design selected from a national competition.
