Clark McClelland's Concept Art for Apollo and Shuttle Logos. Includes Hand Lettered Note by Neil Armstrong w/Lettered Signature, Scarce. Clark McClelland had a bit of an artist in him and submitted logo ideas to the various mission crews of Apollo and later the Shuttle Program. One can certainly see his patriotism and passion for space in his art but his designs were competing with so many others to win the favor of the various crews. McClelland submitted the most designs for Apollo 11 and Apollo 12, well over a dozen each.
For Apollo 11, the folio also includes letter to Neil Armstrong and Mike Collins regarding his submissions with one design taken well beyond concept drawings to a legitimate comp.
Better, Neil Armstrong hand lettered a nice reply back thanking McClelland for all his efforts explaining "We felt as though we wanted our own thoughts incorporated into the patch & have completed our design. I thought you might like your renditions back." NEIL ARMSTRONG signed his name, hand printed, which can be difficult to find.
For Apollo 12, McClelland was close to Alan Bean and submitted numerous concept and some prove quite winning especially a series of concepts involving a Viking ship.
Finally concepts for Apollo 8, Apollo 9, Apollo 13, are included as well as concept logos for rockets while at Martin.
McClelland did design a lovely memorial patch for the crew of STS-51L that was produced. Patch and final design included.
