Lee and William Mahone /Readjuster Party. 1885 Color Lithograph of "The Old Fox Nailed Up At Last" with "Old Virginia Fox, Mahone. There is a mammoth amount of history with these two Civil War giants, Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Confederate General William Mahone and it makes for great reading. This fantastic illustration with original color tinting, lifted from the Nov. 11th 1885 issue of Puck references William Mahone's complete reversal of his Confederate views and formed the biracial Readjuster party to abolish policies that kept Virginia a whites/elite state. His movement won the control of the state legislature and the governor's seat with Mahone elected to the US Senate. Lee was firmly against such a radical movement in Virginia and was able to shut down the Readjuster party, making it the shortest lived political party. Hence the old fox nailed to the door
Original lithograph 8 x 8.75 expensively matted and framed to 16.5 x 17" and in superior ready to hang condition. Great piece.
