Washington Irving: Early US Passport Issued by US Legation in London, July 15, 1831 Signed by Irving as Chargé d' Affaires of the US (1783-1859) Diplomat and celebrated historian, biographer and famously, the author of the short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Offered is an early US passport signed by Washington Irving as Chargé d' Affaires of the United States to the United Kingdom at the time. Here he authorizes a Joshua Tarpan of the United States free passage and protection to to travel to France. Excellent signature by Irving that has remained quite bold and distinct.
