John C. Frémont - Signature Display with Engraved Portrait, with 1968 B. Altman Provenance Letter. Handsome display featuring a bold ink signature of John C. Frémont (1813-1890), mounted beneath a finely engraved portrait of the famed explorer and Civil War general. Known as "The Pathfinder," Frémont mapped vast stretches of the American West, served as a Union major general, and became the first Republican presidential candidate in 1856.
The signature is clean and well-preserved, matted in blue with gilt-bordered windows and ready for framing. Included with the display is a typed provenance letter dated February 11, 1968, on the letterhead of B. Altman & Co., Rare Books and Autographs Department, confirming the original sale of this signed Frémont portrait to collector E. A. Hartfeld. The letter is signed in ink by Dorothy Haldeman, Assistant Buyer for the department.
