Major General Fitz Porter: Career Union General who was Court-Martialed for his Actions at Second Bull Run, Ultimately Exonerated (1822-1901) On November 25, 1862, Porter was arrested and court-martialed for his actions at Second Bull Run. The reason is complex because at the time Porter was responsible for the defeat but not a catastrophic loss. It was not until 1878 that his case was reviewed and it became clear his actions moving his troops actually prevented a catastrophic slaughter of Union Soldiers. His commission was reinstated. He then retired two days later and enjoyed great success in private industry. Offered is an autographed envelope signed to his wife which is Porter's name as well.
