Chevra Kadisha Charity Collection / Burial Fund Box. A rare mid-19th century Chevra Kadisha (Jewish burial society) charity box executed in copper in the form of a tankard or lidded mug, fitted with a slot in the lid for coin donations and a robust strap handle at the side. The cylindrical body is engraved with Hebrew inscriptions identifying its use for burial charity, framed within an architectural cartouche motif. Flanking the inscription are engraved symbolic elements including heraldic lions.
The dark original patina is largely intact, presenting as a deep brown surface with age oxidation consistent with 19th-century copper. The top edge shows splitting and distortion from prolonged use and age; scattered surface abrasions, soft denting, and wear are present throughout, especially around the rim and lid. The lid retains its original coin slot. Hebrew inscriptions are present on the lid.
