What is remarkable is the muster involves the Union Army who held Fort Jefferson (the largest brick masonry structures ever built) not only for a prison but to secure the Gulf.
In 1861 the fort received its first prisoner of which many were Union criminals. Fort Jefferson remained under construction until 1874 and soon downsized t a mere garrison given hurricanes and illness. It is now a popular site to visit. Estimated Value $200 - 500
