Rare Broadside by Nathaniel P. Banks Proclamation for a Day of Public Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1858. Extremely rare broadside publicizing a proclamation by Nathaniel P. Banks, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for a date set April 15, 1858.
"It has been a custom of the people of the Commonwealth from an early period of their history, at this season to set apart the cares and pleasures of life, a portion of time in which they might humbly acknowledge their dependence upon Almighty God and together present their petitions before the Throne of Grace for a continuance of His signal mercies" He champions a day of fasting, humiliation and prayer, attend church and confess one's delinquencies and sins.
It is truly amazing this piece has survived nearly 170 years in very fine antique condition. It is also a view of society at the time and the attempts the church and many politicians tried to motivate (intimidate?) attendance. Remarkable artifact.
